John Southworth has had both personal and professional experiences in the field of substance abuse and mental health for more than 40 years. He continues to use this experience and knowledge to assist individuals and families through their own personal struggles.
Through his personal battle with substance abuse he has learned that there is no cure to the disease of addiction, and it can be fatal if the appropriate education and steps to recovery are not taken. This knowledge is the driving force behind John's motivation to educate others of the disease of addiction, and it also plays a major role in John's continued sobriety of over 20 years. The desire to educate others led John to his interest in obtaining his Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC). John accomplished this goal in 1984 with his certification from The National Association of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Counselors (NAADAC), and International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (ICRC).
John began his career as a licensed DUI evaluator in 1983 at the Nelson Institute. After receiving his CADC in 1984 he began providing both inpatient and outpatient counseling for groups and individuals. This experience led to a deeper desire to not only provide counseling and education, but to provide interventions which "help people help others" through the process of recovery from addiction, and also to assist those who have mental health issues. John started his professional career as an interventionist in 1984, and has since conducted hundreds of successful interventions, both nationally and internationally, on a professional and public level. He is currently a preferred interventionist for numerous prestigious treatment centers throughout the country.
John has provided, and continues to provide, training on drug abuse and awareness for school employees, local communities, physicians, nurses and other professionals. These educational events also provide resources for the recovery process and continued sobriety.
In 1993, in cooperation with the Idaho Medical Association and the Idaho State Board of Medicine, John began as the Program Coordinator for the Physician Recovery Network, assisting physicians in maintaining their productive careers, while working to protect the public. In 1996 John contracted with the Idaho State Board of Nursing as the Program Coordinator for the Program for Recovering Nurses, monitoring nurses in recovery to assist the Board of Nursing in providing public safety.
After the successful coordination of programs for physicians and nurses throughout the state of Idaho, John established Southworth Associates to implement similar programs to assist other professionals through the recovery process. With this concept in mind, John worked with the Idaho State Bar and the Idaho State Board of Dentistry to implement the Lawyers Assistance Program and the Program for Recovering Dental Professionals. John also formed a similar program for professionals not encompassed in the previously formed programs. The Idaho Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) is set up to help and support lawyers who are experiencing problems associated with alcohol and/or drug use or mental health issues.
One thing that John has noticed in his 10+ years of coordinating successful programs in Idaho, is that the majority of people in recovery from substance abuse simply do not have access to monitoring programs. In 2005 John started Southworth Associates Monitoring (SAM) to give an under-served population the same tools for recovery that the doctors and nurses have had for years. Mirrored off of the PRN programs, the SAM program uses the same diagnostic tools and monitoring protocol.
In order to maintain the highest level of services possible for individuals and families suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues, John maintains professional affiliations nationwide, including a position on the Board of Directors for both the Western Federation of Physician Health Programs and the Association of Intervention Specialists. Through these affiliations, John has been able to build and maintain a comprehensive network of services throughout the world, and is able to provide assistance at a moment's notice.
